The National Appliance Energy Conservation Act better known as NAECA will mandate that any residential water heaters built on or after April 16th, 2015 must adhere to the new energy efficiency standards. Any products built before that date may be sold or installed after the effective date. The chart shows the NAECA guidelines for both electric and gas residential water heaters.
Westinghouse Water Heating's existing line of residential gas water heaters already meet all future energy efficiency standards. Remember the change requiring higher energy efficiency standards on gas residential water heaters means that the market for condensing appliances will grow dramatically in 2015 and our products will become more price competitive as the pricing gap narrows between our products and the competition.
For electric residential water heaters 50 gallons and under Westinghouse Water Heating will meet the new energy efficiency guidelines with modifications to our existing products. While all of the major water heater manufacturers expect to increase the size of their units to meet these new guidelines, Westinghouse Water Heating does not anticipate needing to increase the existing dimensions of our units.
For units over 55 gallons all electric products that meet the definition of “residential” will need to move to heat pump technology to meet the new standards. After July 13th 2015 when the new universal energy efficiency descriptor and test protocols take effect Westinghouse Water Heating intends to offer modified 80, 100 and 115 gallon units. The new models will maintain their existing (same as today’s) dimensions without heat pump technology and will be rated as commercial units which do not need to meet the new NAECA regulations.
Most water heater manufacturers will need to increase the size, weight and price of their appliances to meet the new NAECA regulations. Westinghouse Water Heating has always met the stringent standards of efficiency and will not require extensive changes to meet regulations. Our appliances will continue to perform as they have in the past!
Moving forward, Westinghouse Water Heating innovative heating systems will continue to strive for higher efficiencies, leaving our products as leaders in the industry.
Learn more about Westinghouse Water Heating with the below FAQs! Have a question? Leave a comment and we will answer and add it to our FAQ page.
Q: Why stainless steel?
A: Our products are made with high quality, durable stainless steel to resist corrosion and last a lifetime. Stainless steel tanks are lightweight, minimize scale build up, and eliminate the need for anode rods.
Q: Where are your products manufactured?
A: The majority of our Westinghouse Water Heating products are made in the USA.
Q: What makes your products highly efficient?
A: Our products are made with the highest quality materials and repeatedly tested to make sure that they are operating at the highest levels of energy efficiency. Heater owners with mild to low efficiency heating products, such as old gas furnaces, may only be utilizing as little as 50-60% of energy consumed, sending tons of cash straight through the chimney. With a Westinghouse Water Heating system, 90% or more of every dollar spent to heat the home is being used. That is real savings.
Q: What does turndown ratio mean?
A: The ratio of a burner’s capacity at full fire to its lowest firing point before shut-down. If a 1 million BTU boiler can fire as low as 100,000 BTUs, it has a 10 to 1 turndown ratio. Appliances that have a wider turndown ratio are typically more efficient at meeting variable loads.
Q: What is a condensing unit?
A: Condensing is operating a combustion-type heat source so that the water vapor produced during combustion condenses on the internal surfaces of the heat exchanger.
Q: What is an AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) rating?
A: An efficiency rating expressed as a percentage, based on a federal government test procedure. The test includes combustion efficiency, flue loss, and flue loss in the burner off cycle. The data is calculated to simulate a complete heating season of operation. AFUE measurements are calculated for residential boilers only.
Q: What are the benefits of tankless water heaters?
A: Tankless water heaters save you energy and money by only using water when you need it. They eliminate the extra cost of hot water storage. Our wall hung tankless units also have a smaller footprint, providing space savings. The Westinghouse Residential Tankless Water Heater has an ultra low NOx combustion system, providing additional environmental savings.
