Engineer Week: Justin Jenne

Posted by Westinghouse Water Heating on Feb 27, 2015 10:00:00 AM

Justin_JenneJustin Jenne has been an engineer at Westinghouse Water Heating from day one! Jenne graduated with a Bachelors and Masters in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Jenne has been a valuable asset to our engineering team and has helped engineer some of our best-selling high efficiency products.

Jenne’s passion for engineering started at a young age, and developed into a career goal as time went on. “I always knew what I wanted to do, I just didn’t know exactly what it was called or how it applied to the real world,” Jenne said. “It wasn’t until I was in the 8th or 9th grade that I figured out it was called Mechanical Engineering and how to go about becoming one.”

As a child, Jenne’s curiosity led him to take things apart to see how they worked. Jenne would then try to reassemble the pieces in hopes of making it better.

“When I was about 11-12 years old, we put an addition on the house and [my parents] included me as an adult when laying out the design, plans, and the physical construction. Interestingly enough that included the installation of a new radiant heating system and upgrading the existing structures heat. When looking back on it with them they laugh, they say 'we can’t believe how much we listened to you, you were only a kid!'" Jenne said.

Today, Jenne takes his knowledge and passion for engineering and applies it to help make the best heating and hot water systems for Westinghouse Water Heating. One of his lead projects include Westinghouse Water Heating's Residential Gas Water Heater

“I love the fact that as an engineer at Westinghouse Water Heating, you can wear many different hats. You can start from the very beginning of designing a heat exchanger using Computational Fluid Dynamics, to testing in the lab, to Solidworks Designs, to the look of the product, to reviewing items directly with management, to assisting in product launch with manufacturing and much more. In smaller type company if you have the passion and desire you can have a great impact in the department, company and products. Very few engineers I know can go to a website with their family and friends a say “I designed that and it’s going in thousands of homes today,” Jenne said.

Thanks, Justin, for your continuous hard work and dedication to Westinghouse Water Heating! We can’t wait to see what high efficiency heating products you come up with next!

Tomorrow: Introduce A Girl To Engineering Day!

Posted by Westinghouse Water Heating on Feb 25, 2015 10:00:00 AM

Tomorrow is Introduce A Girl To Engineering Day! Typically, Engineering is an industry influenced by males. Introduce A Girl To Engineering Day reminds us to encourage girls to consider a career in the engineering field. Engineering requires a creative mind and intelligence, which is why women should not be forgotten when it comes to this inventive discipline.

Today, we would like to shine the spotlight on Jessica Raposa, Westinghouse Water Heating's one and only woman engineer! Jessica has been with Westinghouse Water Heating from the inception, and continues to make us proud with her high efficiency heating creations!

"Don’t be afraid to follow your dreams, and don’t let being in a male-dominated field intimidate you. Be confident!" - Jessica Raposa, Westinghouse Water Heating

Check out this Q&A we had with Jessica!

Q:     When did you decide to become an engineer?

A:    My junior year of high school

Q:     What college/university did you attend?

A:    University of Massachusetts Dartmouth

Q:     What made you interested in engineering?

A:   My love for Rollercoasters and Walt Disney World is what drove me to go into Engineering. While growing up throughout middle school & high school I played this one game, Roller Coaster Tycoon, where all I used to do was design roller coasters for my imaginary theme parks. And while growing up taking vacations to Walt Disney World, seeing all the engineering detail that has gone into those parks inspired me to become an engineer.

Q:   What was the first product you engineered?

A:    The first product I ever engineered was a team effort with my Senior Design Engineering Team at UMASS Dartmouth. We designed and built a Tensile Testing Machine for use in one of the labs.

Q:      What products have you helped engineer at Westinghouse Water Heating?

A:     Westinghouse Commercial Gas Water Heater and a couple of parts in the Westinghouse Residential Gas Water Heater.

Q:     What is your favorite part of working as an engineer at Westinghouse Water Heating?

A:    My favorite part of working as an engineer at Westinghouse Water Heating is being part of such a great team of individuals. We all work great together as a group to overcome any challenges and never hesitate to help each other out. We encourage each other to do our best every day!

Q:  What is your advice for other girls attempting to become an engineer?

A:  Don’t be afraid to follow your dreams, and don’t let being in a male-dominated field intimidate you. Be confident!

Westinghouse Water Heating is Celebrating Engineers Week!

Posted by Westinghouse Water Heating on Feb 23, 2015 10:00:00 AM

What is Engineers Week?

eweekNational Engineers Week started in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers. The week always falls on President George Washington’s Birthday, as he is considered the nation’s first engineer!

National Engineers Week is observed by more than 70 engineering, education, and cultural societies and over 50 corporations and government agencies. The week is devoted to engineers to recognize their contributions to society and raise awareness of the importance of learning math, science, and technical skills.

Here at Westinghouse Water Heating, we have some of the best engineers on staff working on the latest innovations in the heating industry. We would like to recognize the exceptional efforts they have made to create heating systems that are highly efficient.

Our engineers include:

  • Aleksandr Kovalenko, Director of Engineering
  • Justin Jenne
  • Jessica Raposa
  • David Montrond
  • Brian Pickett
  • Conor Cross
  • Mark Orzeck
  • Hong Hu

Stay tuned throughout the week for more information about our engineers!

Natural Gas & Electric Are Prime Energy Sources for Home Heating

Posted by Westinghouse Water Heating on Feb 19, 2015 10:00:00 AM

Several different types of fuels are used to heat our homes. Nearly half use natural gas. Electric comes in close second at 34%.  Heating_with_Natural_Gas_chart

At Westinghouse Water Heating we offer both natural gas and electric water heaters.

Our Residential Gas Water Heater natural gas water heater is highly efficient, with up to a 97% thermal efficiency rating. It's unique cupronickel heat exchanger boasts the best heat transfer properties in the industry. The laser welded 316L stainless steel tank construction is corrosion resistant, eliminating the need for anode rods and protecting the tank against harsh water conditions for a lifetime of durability against leaks.

The Residential Gas Water Heater is available in 50, 60, and 80 gallons and has up to 76,000 BTUhs. It is Energy Star certified, saving you energy and money. Gas condensing water heaters are highly efficienct at heating water, so the tank heats up almost as quickly as it's filled. Running out of hot water will be a distant memory!

Our Electric Water Heater is also highly efficient, with up to a .92 energy factor. The Electric Water Heater is laser welded through a concentrated heat source producing high quality, long lasting 316L stainless steel construction. This material provides superior corrosion resistance, eliminates the need for anode rods, and protects against harsh water conditions for a lifetime of durability against leaks. Its stainless steel screw plug increases corrosion resistance for longer element life versus conventional elements.
