Looking to upgrade or replace your water heater? While we normally focus on providing you with new and improved water heaters, this Renewal Day we thought we’d discuss how to recycle your old water heater!
To begin, make sure the water heater power is off before removing any parts or draining the water.
Disassemble your old water heater to drain the water. Disconnect from the electrical outlet and let cool. Connect the hose to the drainage valve and run the hose outside into a drain. Run the other end of the hose where the excess water will not ruin anything. Once the heater is empty, detach it from the cold and hot water pipes.
To dispose:
You’ll want to contact your city/town to see if you can place the water heater with the regular curbside recycling – this will be the easiest way. Unfortunately, many places do not accept large appliances when picking up regular recycling. If this happens, you’ll want to call your local recycling facility to see if it accepts hot water heaters.
Additionally, some utility companies will properly dispose of your old water heater for you. Call your utility company and see if they will do this. Occasionally, you can ask the installer of your new water heater if they can take the old one for you.
