Keeping Your HVAC System in the Best Shape

We came across the below blog recently from NextStepLiving.com and had to share! Here are there tips to keeping your HVAC system in tip-top shape.

You know the saying, ‘it’s never too late’? Well, that doesn’t necessarily ring true for making sure your heating system is working properly. Having it fail during a snow storm is usually too little, too late. So how should homeowners prepare their heating systems for winter weather? The secret lies in regular maintenance. Home Energy Advisor of the Month Patrick Holmes explains how to keep your heating system in tip-top shape, and what to look for in a new model for maximum efficiency and savings:

Get a Check-Up. Set a yearly reminder for yourself to turn on your heating system to make sure it’s working before the cold weather sets in and you really need to use it. Finding out that your heater is broken in the dead of winter or during a snow storm is never ideal. If your boiler has water pipes going through areas of your home that aren’t weatherized, like your garage, make sure to get them insulated. Keep track of the age and well-being of your heating system by replacing your furnace every 15 to 20 years, and your boiler every 25 or so years. If you see any signs of corrosion or failing, have someone check it out right away.

Choose Wisely. If you’re in the market for a new, more efficient boiler or furnace, it’s best to get a sealed or on-demand model, often in a wall-mounted tank. The great news is that most new gas heating systems can get up to between 97% to 99% efficiency, while new oil-based heating models can reach up to 88% efficiency. For a new gas-based heating system, you’ll get a lot more efficiency out of a sealed system that vents to the side, so you’re not losing heat up your chimney, but make sure to keep the vents clear of snow, leaves or other blockages for safety. A blocked vent can build up the risk for carbon monoxide exposure.
